127 realize the futility of getting away with a hold-up of the institution. All six times the holdup men have been captured, most of the time within minutes of the robbery. In 1926, it took two days to apprehend, another time it took just a day. The remaining four times, capture has been a mere 30 minutes or so. Credit for the quick arrests and recovery of money is due to the alertness of guards and customers of the bank and they are to be congratulated for their astuteness and concern.” A Board committee was re-formed to search for a bank CEO in January of 1983. The seventh robbery at the Boyce location occurred at 12:35 P.M. on February 7, 1983. Michael Profitt, described as a “lone man with a long barrel handgun” entered the branch and told the four employees to “lie down.” They didn’t. Profitt walked over to Mrs. Hudson, handed her a bag and told her to ”give me all your money.” $1,940 was taken. The getaway was witnessed by Mr. Rodney Ferguson (a customer), who noted the license number. Profitt was arrested 30 minutes later. Mr. Karl Anderson, a customer, related a story regarding the frequency of account statements. He opened an account with Bank of Clarke County in 1983 and was asked “how often do you wish to receive a statement?” Mr. Anderson asked what the normal procedure was. The Banks’ response was “when we fill a page.” He opted for monthly. On April 21, 1983, Mr. Lewis M. Ewing was appointed as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, coming from Shenandoah Valley National Bank in Winchester, Virginia where he was Chief Operations and Financial Officer. He began work on July 18, 1983. Joint groundbreaking ceremonies for the $1.5 million expansion and renovation projects were conducted on May 31, 1983. Boyce’s ceremony was held in a cornfield at the new site at 2:30 P.M. Boyce Mayor Carl Pope and Town Recorder Mae Lanham were present. Miss Lanham was quoted in the paper as saying, when hearing about the move of the branch, “move not the ancient landmarks which thy fathers have set.” Mr. Pope told directors the town would benefit from the new facility, referring partly to traffic issues downtown, and added that he was looking forward to the grand opening in mid-September. Berryville’s ceremony occurred behind Coiners Department Store at 3:15 P.M. Board Chairman Eustace Jackson announced that Berryville would have a brick façade to harmonize with the courthouse and other county buildings north of it. Mr. Jackson commented that he was “proud of the bank’s good sound growth.” Berryville Mayor J. C. Huffman called the ceremony a “happy occasion” for both Berryville and Clarke County saying the expansion of the “long-standing institution would serve the citizens here better. When you think of Clarke County, you think of the Bank of Clarke.” Bank of Clarke’s first computer system was purchased for $13,895 and installed during the summer of 1983. This installation led to the establishment of account numbers for checking accounts in 1984. A ribbon cutting was conducted at the new Boyce branch on October 24, 1983. An Open House followed on November 17th. In December of 1983, a mandatory retirement age of 70 was established
